Knowledge management still is the weak spot in large technology driven companies, such as Thales. A few decades ago, the problem was perceived to be manageable because the product cycles were widely spaced in time and thus there was time enough to educate and train on the job and at the same time look around in the world.
Today, that is no longer the case. Another problem with large international companies is that technology is applied and developed in multiple entities and for a variety of product lines and markets and no transverse organisation and simplistic ‘paper-shuffling-based’ budgeting system can compensate the lack of communication and dissemination over large (physical, social and organisational) distances and barriers.

However, such a system depends on the registration and parsing of so-called knowledge profiles of employees, which need to be complete, machine-searchable and maintainable and usable.
The assignment focuses on the definition and design of such knowledge profiles and the necessary workflows and tools to construct, store and parse and maintain them with the least amount of effort. The assignment is also about the design of a method to validate the utility of the profiles, both from an EFS-system point of view and from a human user’s point of view.
The assignment is part of a set of studies, only partly completed, that have as a purpose to find out if a new expert finding system for Thales, called TPNet, is feasible.
