Wind is gaining ground
Energy from a windmill
Wind energy has gained a small place next to the still dominant share of fossil fuels. As opposed to fossil fuels, we cannot just ‘extract’ wind energy when we need it. The electricity produced by wind turbines is not always available when the energy demand is peaking. Even though wind energy is sustainable, a few critical questions remain:
- How can wind energy become less dependent on the force of the wind?
- How can the energy produced by windmills compensate the landscape pollution and the generated sound?
- Can individuals afford to buy a windmill?

Wind in Twente
Lots of opposition can be expected when plans are developed to build windmills in a beautiful landscape. Not only are windmills a visible element in the landscape, but they also generate noise pollution. Just like solar energy, wind energy is one of the most sustainable energy sources present. Therefore, investing in the further development of technologies can gain significant and sustainable results. Students from the University of Twente have contributed to developing windmill superconductors. They are now active in Denmark, replacing heavy magnets. Whether these new wind turbines will be ground-breaking for the future of wind energy is currently being investigated.
