Photonics for good health

Good health is important to humans. In recent years we have made great progress in the field of innovative solutions in healthcare. One of these technologies is "photonics". This technology uses light particles (photons) for processing and sending data. In this way, you can, for example, also weld and cut with a laser beam. "There is not one photonics," explains Arne Leinse, Chief Commercial Official at LioniX International. “Photonic solutions are present in many products.”

In short

  • A new innovative solution in healthcare is "photonics"
  • This allows a lot of work to be done in a short time
New ways to detect diseases

Leinse sees opportunities in the healthcare industry. “It is already possible to measure blood saturation with your phone or make a heart video with a watch. If we supply GPs with the right tools to scan, for example, suspicious birthmarks, the threshold to be examined is lowered.” Such applications may be suitable for third-world countries as well, as they are small and accessible. A lot can be done in a short amount of time. It is a nice way to make the world a bit better with technology from Twente.

Expanding market

As enabling technology, photonics makes all sorts of innovations possible. Leinse expects photonics to grow just like electronics did. “Photonics will not replace electronics since true value lies in the combination of both.” Sending and receiving data with the help of photons ensures more efficient, better and faster equipment. Leinse develops applications with photonic chips for metrology and life sciences, among others, at Lionix International.
