Biodiversity
Biodiversity has been declining more and more, and this is becoming a global problem. Biodiversity is about more than just flowers and plants.
Well-balanced biodiversity ensures high-quality drinking water and clean(er) air, among other things, and it also gives us good and healthy soil for growing the plants and crops that we eat.
Biodiversity is about more than just flowers and plants. Biodiversity is closely related to the earth and the climate, and it is also important for our nutrition.
Mapping biodiversity
Twente is also paving the way for biodiversity in the science sector. Having a clear overview of all multicellular flora and fauna in the Netherlands within five to ten years, as well as an infrastructure to identify the species. That is the ambition of the ARISE mega-project, in which the University of Twente is a major partner.
The infrastructure will combine data of eDNA, image and sound recognition and radar data, to form a complete picture of biodiversity in the Netherlands. ARISE provides policymakers, water boards, provinces and other stakeholders with more reliable information about biodiversity. Dutch researchers can also use the collected information.
Good and healthy soil is important for growing food. This can be done with sustainable fertilisation and even by using innovative technologies in agriculture. Mineral Valley has testing gardens to research, in practice, which applications and technologies work best for agriculture. Farmers, knowledge institutes, governments and companies in Twente work together in this way, to achieve circular agriculture in Twente. Read more About Mineral Valley here.
