Circulaire textiel in Twente

Twente has a long textile history and much knowledge about textile recycling. The region is a leading party when it comes to making the textile industry circular; a crucial goal in the energy transition.

Annually, we recycle about 33 per cent of the 136 million kilos of collected textile waste in the Netherlands. Only 1 per cent is recycled into new raw material for the textile industry. The reason for this is that the rest is often of low quality and because zips, buttons, labels and trouser pockets are often hard to recycle. The Circular Textile Lab and other companies are testing innovations for recycling textile waste on a larger scale, together with researchers and students from Saxion University of Applied Sciences.
